In such heavy ion collisions a new state of matter called the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) is formed where, in this state, quarks are no longer confined to hadrons but are free to move about. Studying this state is expected to lead to a far greater understanding of QCD as this is the only known state where one can find free quarks and gluons, the degrees of freedom of QCD. The QGP is known to be a very hot, very dense medium that is rapidly expanding, so one needs techniques that allow for the study of a Quantum Field Theory in an extreme and very dynamical environment.
